Howard’s Beat
The club has 3 rods on Thursdays and Sundays
Access to the beat
Please note the access route is via a private road with a strict 5mph speed limit, members upsetting residents by speeding may be subject to disciplinary action. Turn off the B5605 on to the access road this is steep as you leave the main road and you may need to engage first gear. If you are travelling from the Wrexham direction you will double back on yourself. Follow the road past the old farm house on your left and around the back of the last house on the right. You will come to a steel gate (this replaced the old wooden gate) which must be kept closed. There is a club combination lock on this gate, once you enter the lock code push the hasp into the lock body to open it. Go through this gate and follow the track downhill. After about 100m you will come to a steel fence, there is a combination lock (not a club lock) on this gate the code is 0000, please leave the gate as you find it, if you are the last person off the beat make sure you lock the gate.

Pools on the beat
The beat starts just below the bridge and ends at the top of the Donkey Pool on our Chirk beat. The pools at the top of beat are overgrown and not fished at the moment. The fishing effectively starts at the Nursery Pool.

Bridge Pool The banks are steep and overgrown this pool is better suited to spinning.
Upper Nursery The banks are steep and overgrown this pool is better suited to spinning.
Nursery This pool fishes the fly well but you need to wade fairly deeply at the head of the pool. Hot spot for sea trout is opposite the path down to the river.
Withies A short pool which fishes the fly well.
Boundary A short pool which fishes the fly well.
Slips This is the main salmon pool on the beat. Start right at the head of the pool and fish the current which runs along the opposite bank all the way to the ’bubble’.
Lower Slips This is a good sea trout pool on the beat.
Donkey Pool This is the top section of the pool on our Chirk beat.
