Chirk Beat

River Dee – Chirk
Non-Fishing Companions: Are permitted
This is the Club`s own beat on the Dee. There is approximately 900 yds of right hand bank fishing and is generally thought of as a high water beat (up to 1.2m). It is a classic salmon beat – perfect fly water with five good pools. The grayling fishing is good and there are the occasional sea trout and brown trout. The bottom is very rough and it is not recommended for night fishing. A wading staff and life jacket are essential aids to safe fishing on this beat. The beat fishes well in high water, particularly in September and October when there are plenty of fish running. The fish do not hang about on the beat but if you catch a fish there will normally be others; as with all running fish you need to keep in front of them to be successful. The back eddy in the Sun Pool fishes well in high water (over 700 on the gauge) as the fish get swept into it on high water it when they first arrive and will splash around until they find the way out. This back eddy can also hold lots of sea trout when the river is low. In low water the best chance is probably the Donkey Pool at the head of the beat. The map shows an island which has now been washed away, if you wade in this area please note there is deep water at the edge of where the island was, wade carefully!
How to get there
OS map reference SJ 296 416 to 292 409
From Chester A483 – Take the A539 in the direction of Llangollen. Turn left at the third island on to the B5605 in the direction of Newbridge. Cross the Dee and go uphill to the landfill site on your left. 200 yards pass the landfill site you will come to Ty-Maen Farm on your left. Drive through the wooden gate on the left (not into the farm), please note this a very tight turn. If you are coming from Newbridge, drive past the farm entrance and turn right into the campsite, you can turn around safely to make access easy. The metal gate is locked (not a club lock) and with a new fence (2020) the key is in the top of the hollow gate post (Right hand side). This gate must be locked at all times please ensure the key is returned to where you found it before driving to the river. Follow the track observing the speed limit of 5mph and park by the gate at the bottom (on left) where there is sufficient space for 3 cars, please park sensibly (facing the river). Please note the farmer uses the corral at the entrance for treating sheep if the farmer is using this facility when you arrive you will need to negotiate access with the farmer. If on your return from the river the farmer has his sheep in the corral you will have to wait until he has returned the sheep to the field to exit.
NB. The notices on the gates and styles denying access do not apply to Club Members.
